Science at Christ Church
At Christ Church we think that science holds an important standing in the curriculum due to its relevance to our everyday lives and to the world in general. Through the teaching of science, children begin to understand how science helps us understand the world around us and how it can contribute to changes in how we live and think.
At Christ Church we encourage children to:
- Be inquisitive about the world
- Think about how or why things happen
- Think independently
- To listen to the opinions of and discuss ideas with others
- To observe and investigate ideas in class and (where possible) at home
- To arrive at own conclusions
- To have a life-long respect for science
Through the curriculum, teachers aim to develop children’s existing ideas and knowledge and give children the opportunity to learn through first hand experience. This includes providing stimulating teaching resources eg light bulbs, buzzers and batteries for teaching electricity, torches for teaching about light and dark, models of skeletons and the human body for teaching about the human body as well as using ‘junk’ material from home to investigate everyday phenomena - Rosemary Walsh, Science Lead
We also try to enhance children’s learning through visits to the local wood, Woodland’s Farm, Wide Horizons Environment Centre and relevant museums in the London area.
