Home Learning – Year 5 – Spring Term First Half 2020

Spelling and Times Tables

Times tables

Your child will participate in a times table test using TT Rock Stars every Wednesday.

We are covering fractions in Maths this half-term, so your child would greatly benefit from continued times tables practise at home using the TT Rock stars app.

Children will be tested on all words in their level. However, the order in which the words are read out will vary from week to week. If your child spells every word in a level correctly for two continuous weeks, they will move onto the next spelling level. This ensures that they can consistently spell the words and, hopefully, we will see evidence of this in their everyday writing. Testing will take place on a Tuesday this term.

Here are some suggestions to help your child learn their spellings:

  • Look, say, cover, write, check
  • Trace, copy and replicate – a similar process to look, say, cover, write, check but is about developing automaticity and muscle memory
  • Segmentation – splitting the word into its relevant phonemes
  • Drawing around the word to show the shape – making a clear distinction in size where there are ascenders and descenders
  • Drawing a related image around the word – linking meaning to tricky or technical words so that they become more memorable
  • Words without vowels – taking the vowels out of spellings and asking your child to insert them
  • Pyramid words – writing words out a letter at a time (and then reversing the process so that you end up with a diamond)
  • Clapping and counting to identify the syllables
  • Rainbow writing – using coloured pencils to highlight the tricky parts of a word
  • Saying the word in a funny way – for example, pronouncing the ‘silent’ letters in a word

Homework Online – IXL

Children will complete their maths homework using the school home learning and school assessment tool, IXL.  Children will be allocated homework on a Friday, based on what the class have been learning that week. It is expected that you supervise your child’s use of IXL, as completion of maths homework will be monitored weekly.

Below you will find the appropriate homework for each maths group. I do not expect every skill in each box to be done by this date but I expect every child to do at least 30 minutes of IXL per week. If 30 minutes is not completed, your child will be asked to finish their IXL work during lunchtime. Your child can choose which skill they need to work on most from the recommended skills of that week.

When your child logs onto IXL you will notice the huge range of skills they can work on. If your child is enjoying using this programme and wants to practise skills that are not set homework, this would be beneficial to them.

Reading Tasks and Comprehension

The children will be expected to read with/to an adult and to complete a weekly reading comprehension task. As always, please write a comment in your child’s reading record once they have read or, alternatively, the children can write their own comment on what they thought about what they have read. Reading records will be checked every Monday. Please remember to (or remind children to) write the date along with the comment,
