Spelling and Times Tables

Your child will participate in a spelling/times table test on the dates stated above. They will be tested on all of their words/tables; however, the order in which the words/tables are read out will vary from week to week.

Here are some suggestions to help your child learn their spellings:

  • Look, say, cover, write, check
  • Trace, copy and replicate – a similar process to look, say, cover, write, check but is about developing automaticity and muscle memory
  • Segmentation – splitting the word into its relevant phonemes
  • Drawing around the word to show the shape – making a clear distinction in size where there are ascenders and descenders
  • Drawing a related image around the word – linking meaning to tricky or technical words so that they become more memorable
  • Words without vowels – taking the vowels out of spellings and asking your child to insert them
  • Pyramid words – writing words out a letter at a time (and then reversing the process so that you end up with a diamond)
  • Clapping and counting to identify the syllables
  • Rainbow writing – using coloured pencils to highlight the tricky parts of a word
  • Saying the word in a funny way – for example, pronouncing the ‘silent’ letters in a word

Maths Homework Online – IXL

This year, children will complete their maths homework using the school home learning and school assessment tool, IXL. Children’s allocated homework will be based on their learning that week. The number of problems and skills to be practised will be set by the class teacher, along with a minimum pass mark. It is expected that you supervise your child’s use of IXL, as completion of maths homework will be monitored weekly.

Individual login and password details for IXL will be distributed by the class teacher. It is advised that you keep these somewhere safe, but please do let the class teacher know if they are misplaced as soon as possible.

Please try to read daily with your child and update the reading journal every few days or so with a comment and pages read over the previous days. We will be checking reading journals for parent signature on a Monday and those children without signed journals will spend break time reading.
